I went with Mariko to the restaurant supply store so I could help lift the 50 lb. bags of flour she uses, but when we stopped at Trader Joe’s, I stayed in the car to lessen the chance of catching the virus. As I sat in the car, I noticed that several other couples were doing the same. The new, more contagious strain of the virus is really worrying.
During this pandemic, I stay away from routes where there are a lot of people, specifically the hike & bike paths that are too narrow to keep a safe distance from other people. So that means I stick to my neighborhood streets where I can run in the road or easily cross to the other side to stay socially distant. However, there are some parts where I have to run on a narrow pathway or sidewalk, which is why I always carry a disposable mask.
I will just put the mask around my wrist, and it’s so light that it doesn’t interfere at all with the running experience. But when I am running on one of these narrow sections and I see another pedestrian or cyclist, I’ll put the mask on. It literally takes just three or four seconds, so why not? Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly?) I haven’t seen any other runners using masks, but maybe now that they’ve seen my put on my mask, it will normalize it to them (or maybe they will feel a little ashamed), and they will start doing the same. Hey, we have to look out for one another!
In other running news, I saw this really great sidewalk art version of It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Very cool!
We’re having some awesome weather here in Central Texas this week so I had to take advantage of it and go for a ride at lunch. We live near Brushy Creek Trail and I can cycle there easily from my house which is awesome!
The problem with the trail is that it’s too narrow for easy social distancing, and most people on the trail do not wear masks. I counted maybe 2 other cyclists wearing masks, and only 4 pedestrians masked up. I got pretty good at pulling the mask up from my chin to over my mouth and nose when needed, but towards the end of the ride, it was just easier to wear the mask all the time. I just wish others did too! So, I’ll probably not ride the trail much until we are done with COVID, or maybe I will double-layer my masks.
Looking at the stats for this ride, it looks like the distance is 13.1 miles, which is a half-marathon! I guess it would be a good route to run in order to get that achievement. But impossible for me because of the social-distancing thing. I’ll only run on the wide neighborhood streets where I can ditch the mask and keep a good space between myself and others. Oh well…
We’re still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic which has cause some large life-changes, such as working from home, remote learning, no dining out, etc. But there are quite a few small changes too, which I thought were interesting. Or maybe not interesting at all. Anyways, here are some:
I keep the mailbox key in my bicycle bag instead of my car.
I have only worn long pants once. That was for mosquito protection while doing some yard work.
I haven’t worn regular socks or shoes in a long time. It’s either running shoes/socks, or my Birkenstocks.
I now take my showers in the evening. It feels so good to climb into bed nice and clean! I used to take my shower in the morning in order to wake up and get rid of bed-head. But now I can be a bit more lax with my “grooming”. Also, I ride my bicycle or go for a run in the evening, so a shower is necessary.
Today’s photo is of the tree that hangs over the neighborhood mailbox. It’s what prompted me to think about how I keep the mailbox key on my bike instead of my car.
I hope you had a good day and are hanging in there! 😀
Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, and Pani Puri to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Yum!
During the COVID-19 situation we don’t usually have people over, but for an event like this we set up the deck with socially-distanced seating so Mariko and two of her friends could enjoy some time together.

My camera & photos
I use a Fujifilm X-series camera for most of the photos on this site and my Instagram. Why not pick one up for yourself?
