Pencil to Digital (4th Time)

"Tilly" 2019
“Tilly” 2019

I have given up trying to come up with new names for these posts, so I just added “4th Time” to the title of it. But I guess since I often do these pencil sketches that end up in Adobe Illustrator, it’s become my medium(s) of choice, so that’s a good thing!

Speaking of names, I sometimes don’t know what to name each drawing. This time I named the drawing “Tilly” because I was looking at Tilly’s to see if there are any nice shirt collars to use as references. But I ended up just going with a plain t-shirt. 😜

Here’s the pencil sketch that I based the digital version from:

こなばんは。How’s it going?

For today’s drawing, I wanted to work on another version of the previous sketch, but instead of just pencil or watercolor, I wanted to go black and white. I have a container of Kuretake Zig Cartoonist Ink and an Ohuhu water brush and it was fun to use them together. I am pleased with how this version turned out! I had previously used the ink with a cheap brush on regular sketch paper, but using the ink with the firm water brush on watercolor paper makes a HUGE difference! It’s a combination I can see myself enjoying often in the future.

So, it’s been a couple weeks since I started my Daily Drawing habit, and it’s been going well. I’ve only missed one day where I didn’t do something in my sketchbook (traveling and didn’t get to the hotel until 1:30 am!) which is a nice accomplishment. So I’m pretty proud of that. 😊

I hope you had a good day!

Another quick sketch tonight, but I think the body doesn’t match the face at all. So, I’ll probably take the body and re-draw a less-cartoony face for a future drawing. Looking forward to it, actually, because I am pleasantly surprised at how much I like the simple body pose. ☺

Tonight’s sketch is inspired by a song I love – “Stars Above Us” by St. Etienne. Often when I am driving and listening to music, I think to myself I should draw something from the song. So this is the first attempt at that idea.

Stars above us, cars below us
Out on the rooftop, baby
Stars above us, cars below us
Nothing can touch us, baby

Just had to get out of there
I’m tired of all of those places
Up here is out of sight
Outside with the breeze on our faces

Let’s go up the stairway
My band doing it their way
Our sound’s ruling all the airwaves
Butterflies taking flight

Stars above us, cars below us
Out on the rooftop, baby
Stars above us, cars below us
Nothing can touch us, baby

Stars above us, cars below us
Out on the rooftop, baby
Stars above us, cars below us
Nothing can touch us, baby

Sun sets over the city
Won’t you come and catch it with me?
Follow me, right up the stairway
Let’s have some fun tonight

Stars above us, cars below us
Out on the rooftop, baby
Stars above us, cars below us
Nothing can touch us, baby

Stars above us, cars below us
Out on the rooftop, baby
Stars above us, cars below us
Nothing can touch us, baby

Out on the rooftop, out on the rooftop
Stars above us
Out on the rooftop
Stars above us
Out on the rooftop
