こんばんは!Hi, how’s it going?

Today was the last Undoukai, or Sports Day, for our kids as they wrap up their Japanese school careers at Austin Japanese School. Bay will be graduating this year, and Koa has decided not to continue. I can’t believe we’ve gone to 11 undoukais, going back to 2006! Time sure flies!

My oldest son and his classmates decided to have some fun this year by holding their arms behind them as they did the obstacle course and the 100 meter dash. It was pretty funny, although one of the kids fell twice. He was okay.

Besides the sporting events, we enjoyed a delicious bento lunch 🍱 which I mentioned in my previous post. There was karaage (fried chicken), mini-sausages, onigiri (rice balls), edamame, tomatoes, broccoli, potato salad, and tamagoyaki (scrambled egg). It was delicious!

I’m going to miss Undoukai, but at the same time, it will be nice to not have to go… it can be a lot of work, especially when we have to help set up the different events. But I am glad we all got to experience an important part of Japanese culture. 🇯🇵 FYI, the White team won this year… 😫

I hope you had a nice weekend! I’ll leave you with some videos I took of today’s events.

Goodnight!

こんばんは!How’s it going?

Today’s photo is of this morning’s clouds, and the sun coming up. Not too long after, the overcast skies were gone and we had a beautiful day.

Tomorrow is the annual “Undoukai” or Sports Day at the Japanese school 🇯🇵, so today Mariko spent a lot of time in the kitchen preparing our food. Lunch is kind of a fun part of the day, after half of the sporting events are over and all the families relax for a bit and get to eat yummy bento. I always look forward to our bento because it’s so delicious!

Anyways, she was very busy so I helped out by going to the grocery store and then grilling burgers for dinner. 🍔 Of course she had to contribute to dinner too, and for the burger dinner, she baked fresh sesame-seed buns. I have to say, the burgers turned out great. 😄

More about Undoukai tomorrow, so for now, have a good evening!

Today’s photo is of our Thai curry dinner. Mariko seems to have perfected this dish – it was amazing! Tasted perfect to me. And of course I ate too much…

I hope you had a nice Monday and ate well!

こんばんは!Hi, how’s it going?

At my work, we have a weekly food and/or drink social hour, where the company brings in food and we all eat and hang out. Today there were desserts including giant cookies, brownies, fruit tarts, lemon bars, etc. 🍪 I had to try one of the peanut butter cookies, but I kind of regret it. You see, I don’t eat sweets often, and so my body is ultra-sensitive to sugar, and I’ve also grown accustomed to less-sweet Japanese desserts. 🍡 I don’t know if those are less sweet, or if American desserts are just ultra-sugary, but at any rate I wasn’t feeling so great after eating that cookie. It didn’t help that the cookie was enormous!

Back at home, Mariko was baking a beautiful loaf of bread, and you can see it in the photo above. Pretty, isn’t it? To me, the fresh bread is like a dessert to me! I can eat good bread and butter all day. ❤️🍞

While thinking about my daily photo 📸, I looked around the kitchen to see if there was anything interesting, or something I’d like to capture so that years from now, when we are living far away, we can look back and see part of our everyday lives.

We have many “kitcheny” things in the house, so I took a photo of one of the shelves where we keep some oils and vinegars. In Lightroom I used the same preset that I applied to the bread photo. I really like the “look” of the photos from that preset. That’s one thing I love about Lightroom – the ability to adjust the settings and them save them to custom presets. I think it’s a nice way to develop a photographic style.

こんばんは!Hi, how’s it going?

Today I met my friend for lunch at a “gourmet” burger place called Hopdoddy. I really like the food and restaurant, plus the location we went to is close to the best camera store in Austin (and largest in Texas), Precision Camera and Video. We’re both camera otaku, so it’s fun to check out all the cool camera gear and dream about owning the high-dollar cameras. 📷

It was nice to go out for lunch, which is something that I don’t do often these days. I tend to just work through lunch and put in my hours. It has to do with the fact that I usually just have one meal a day (dinner). While that may seem unconventional, unhealthy, and perhaps even crazy, it wasn’t an uncommon way for people to live in the past.

I did a little bit of research about eating habits, and it seems that we as a society only settled on the “three meals a day” standard within the couple hundred years or so, primarily for economic and employment reasons. And of course the modern food industry pushes us to eat more and more. I’m sure the pharmaceutical companies don’t object to that either.

At any rate, when I do go out for lunch, I don’t mind splurging since I’ve been saving money by not buying lunch each day. The burger place we went to is a bit pricey but the food is so tasty! Today’s burger was a special (not on the regular menu) called the “Lil Brat”. 🍔 Since it’s close to Oktoberfest the burger has a sliced bratwurst sausage with grain mustard on top of the beef patty. It was awesome! And I also got a large order of the Kennebec fries 🍟, which I love.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think that living a more restrictive life helps me appreciate things a bit more… in this case, I really savor the food that I eat, since I don’t eat as often. I need to think about this concept some more! 😊

Well, I hope you had a great day and ate well! 🍴
