こんばんは！How’s it going?

Today’s photo is one that I took from my workplace this morning, around 7:45. I liked how the tops of the clouds caught the first rays of the sun. The clouds were the beginning of a cold front which came down all the way from Canada and finally arrived in Texas. 🌬 It’s not too cold since we are still in the mid-70s, but it is a big change from the mid-90s we’ve had the past few days.

I guess Autumn in Texas has begun! 🍂

In other news, my 48th birthday was yesterday. 🎂 I got some wonderful gifts that I’ll post about more in detail, but here’s a quick list:

  • Instant-read meat thermometer
  • Street-photography book
  • Nose/ear hair clippers
  • Bouquet of flowers
  • Awesome sushi dinner 🍣

こんばんは！How’s it going? Surviving the summer-like heat?

Tonight’s photo is of some fresh pears in our kitchen. I think they looked beautiful in the evening light. The shapes are so perfect in their “pearness”, aren’t they? 😊 I think nature is amazing. Even though most fruits and vegetable varieties have been guided by farmers, scientists, and botanists, it’s still incredible that our planet can give birth to such delicious things.

I often wonder how much life exists on other planets in the universe, and what kinds of fruits and veggies exist there. I wonder how many more types of flavors are out there that we’ll never know about. Or maybe our human physiology wouldn’t allow us to perceive these new flavors? Have we tasted all that we are able to taste? These are the questions that keep me awake at night… 😜

こんばんは！How’s it going?

Today’s photos are of our cats, who like to relax in extremely odd positions. Especially the tuxedo cat. I love it when they sleep like that. So funny! 🐱

We normally have kept them in a separate room overnight, but lately we’ve let them roam the house all night and this has led them to coming into our bedroom and hanging out with us. They don’t bother us too much while we sleep, but they tend to make messes in the bathroom. Not poop or anything, but they will knock over houseplants, jump on the counter and push things into the sink, etc. Very annoying! Mariko thinks it’s cute, but I kind of think it’s a nuisance.

Like I may have mentioned before, I like cats, but my preference would be to not have any pets at all. I’m only one of four family members though, so I often get over-ruled on these things. Life’s full of compromises, though, isn’t it? 😜

Undoukai 2016

こんばんは！Hi, how’s it going?

Today was the last Undoukai, or Sports Day, for our kids as they wrap up their Japanese school careers at Austin Japanese School. Bay will be graduating this year, and Koa has decided not to continue. I can’t believe we’ve gone to 11 undoukais, going back to 2006! Time sure flies!

My oldest son and his classmates decided to have some fun this year by holding their arms behind them as they did the obstacle course and the 100 meter dash. It was pretty funny, although one of the kids fell twice. He was okay.

Besides the sporting events, we enjoyed a delicious bento lunch 🍱 which I mentioned in my previous post. There was karaage (fried chicken), mini-sausages, onigiri (rice balls), edamame, tomatoes, broccoli, potato salad, and tamagoyaki (scrambled egg). It was delicious!

I’m going to miss Undoukai, but at the same time, it will be nice to not have to go… it can be a lot of work, especially when we have to help set up the different events. But I am glad we all got to experience an important part of Japanese culture. 🇯🇵 FYI, the White team won this year… 😫
