こんばんは!Hello, how’s it going?

The highlight of today was watching the Dodgers clinch the NL West title in Vin Scully’s last game at Dodger Stadium, with a walk-off homerun in extra innings. It was pretty amazing, and yet another storybook ending.

Like most people who grew up in Los Angeles, Vin Scully was a constant fixture in the summertime, his voice broadcast over the airwaves whenever the Dodgers played. I remember listening to him call games along with Jerry Doggett and Ross Porter, and then Don Drysdale. You could always count on Vin.

It’s hard to believe that he won’t be calling games next year. It is sad, but this graphic sums it up nicely:

It’s funny that my kids love the Dodgers as much as I do, being that they were born here in Texas. Here’s a photo of us celebrating the Dodger win today:

I know next year will be strange since we won’t hear Vin any more, and the Dodgers won’t seem the same because of that. But I’m happy that he enriched our lives over all these years.

Thanks, Vin!

Hi-tech and lo-tech

こんばんは!Hello, how’s it going?

Today’s photo represents today’s hi-tech part of this post. It’s a top down view of some digital storage – the large hard drive is an older 2TB unit that we’ve had for a few years, the smaller hard drive is a brand new Seagate Portable 3TB unit, and the smallest item is a 32GB USB thumb drive.

I’m surprised at how small the 3TB hard drive is, and how inexpensive they have gotten. I bought it at Costco for only $89! It’s USB3, so it doesn’t even have a separate power cord… it draws power through the USB cable. How cool is that? And I love that it doesn’t take up much space, and will be easy to put into my bag when I take it to work. (I keep one of my 2 backup drives at the office) This is an example of technology making things simpler… I love it. 😀

Now for the lo-tech part of the post. Our kitchen sink got clogged way down past the elbow joint and I spent a couple hours trying to fix it. I removed the elbow joint and stuck our plumbing snake pretty far (about 15 feet) but it didn’t seem to hit any clogs, so we’ll have to call a plumber tomorrow.

I feel so stupid because I put a container’s worth of food through the garbage disposal and that seemed to have caused the clog. The food was actually really soft cabbage (from soup), soft tofu, and other soft veggies. I wouldn’t have thought that those could back up the plumbing but perhaps the pipe was just about clogged already and that food just put it over the edge… 😕

Anyways, I think it’s just amazing that we live in a world where most people have magical electronic devices, but we still suffer from clogged plumbing. 🙄

I hope you had a nice Saturday!

Did you know that it’s already Autumn? It’s been so hot lately that I thought it was still Summer! How time flies.

Today’s photo was taken this afternoon, looking straight up. There was a swirling cloud right above our house, and it was changing so rapidly that for a moment I wondered if it was the beginning of a tornado. 🌀 But no, thankfully it was not.

Today my sons and I watched the ceremony the Dodgers had to honor Vin Scully. It was great, and I had a tear in my eye a couple times. Scully has been announcing Dodger games for 67 years now, but this will be his final year. For so many people who grew up in Los Angeles, Vin’s voice was the soundtrack of Summer. He will be missed!

Cultural Shift

こんばんは!How’s it going this evening?

Today was day 2 of my company’s annual customer conference and I was in downtown Austin all day, taking photographs and helping out with the event. It was a great experience talking with our customers and getting to know them. I am not an expert in what our product can do, so I wasn’t able to interact with the customers on that level, but at the social event it was mostly just shooting the breeze about non-work-related topics. It was great fun!

When I got home, I was thinking about watching the Japanese drama/mystery series I am into, and it got me thinking about how it’s such a cultural mindshift to switch over to that show. It’s hard to describe, but these past two days I was 100% in “America mode” 🇺🇸, surrounded by professionals talking about business and socializing as Americans do.

But what I really enjoy and am attracted to is Japanese culture 🇯🇵, and things like watching Japanese tv shows, listening to Japanese music, and following Japanese Instagram feeds… I am definitely a Japanophile. And although I am American, I love Japanese culture so much! I cannot wait for my life to shift over to that culture again.

During my normal workday, I often check up on Japanese blogs, Twitter, and Instagram accounts but these past two days I have been busy at the conference all day so I haven’t had time to do my normal routine. So I miss my Japanese “alter ego”! 😆 It’s funny but I feel like I am straying away from my desired life. I know it is just temporary, but it’s an interesting feeling to experience!

Anyways, those are just some thoughts going through my head this evening. I’ll have to think about it some more to make some kind of sense of it. But for now… I am in a happy mood.

Take it easy, and see you tomorrow!

Day Downtown

こんばんは!Hello, how’s it going?

Tonight I am so tired once again. I spent the day downtown helping out with the photography duties at my company’s annual customer conference. It’s always a lot of fun but it is a loooong day! It’s also tiring because there was a reception at the end of the day and drinks were served! 🍻🍷🍸😜

Tonight’s photo is one I took this morning of the hotel where the conference is being held, and in the distance you can see the Texas Capitol Building. When I went outside to take the photo, the lens fogged up since I just came out from a cool air-conditioned building into the hot and humid Austin air. I had to wait a few minutes for the condensation to clear up, then I took the photo as I crossed the street. I think it came out nice! I used a Canon 60D and an 18-200mm lens (at 18mm) to capture this image.

Tomorrow is day 2 of the 3-day conference, so I better get to bed. 😴

Talk to you tomorrow!
