Today’s photo is of the daily sketch I made, with my Timex Weekender watch and a few other items for fun. I wore this watch today because I saw an online friend’s Instagram post and it looked so nice that I was inspired! You know how you watch a movie where the characters are drinking, and it makes you want a drink, or they’re smoking and you think a cigarette might be nice? I guess that same sort of thing came over me. 😆

Here’s the Instagram pic, btw:

Somewhat related, here’s an article in Wired about all the booze in the movie Casablanca. (found link via Boing Boing)

I hope you had a good day!

Five Watches I Like to Wear

こんばんは。How’s it going?

As some of you might know, I love wrist-watches. I don’t have a huge collection, nor are there any expensive pieces, but I enjoy wearing them, watching videos from other watch enthusiasts, and “window” shopping online.

Today I took two of my watches to a watch repair shop to get the batteries replaced. The Casio tide and moonphase watch (AQW100-1AV) with stainless-steel band has been dead for a couple years now, and the Goofy watch hasn’t run in about 30 years. But both are back in action!

The Goofy watch, which I bought when I was in high school, is too small for my wrist, so I gave it to my wife. I don’t think she had seen it before, but she’s happy to have it! I’m surprised actually. 😄 It just needs a 16mm band.

The Casio aviator watch (MTP4500D-1AV) with the orange hands is my newest addition, just purchased last week. It’s got a quartz movement, a stopwatch function, and a slide-rule bezel. I think it looks nice, and after I replaced the metal band with the black silicone strap, it’s very comfortable on the wrist – the most comfortable in my little collection. I prefer automatic movement over quartz, but I loved the look of this Casio and the price was nice – just $33 on sale!

My favorite watch is still the Seiko SXK007 diver, followed closely by the Seiko SNK809 field watch, but the new Casio aviator watch has quietly entered the mix.

Back to Basics

I was checking out some videos about the really cool Orient Triton watch today, when another video was recommended which was all about the Seiko SNK809. It got me interested in trying on the original black watchband that came with my Seiko, and when I replaced the band, I fell in love with it again. As much as I love NATO and ZULU bands, the Seiko SNK809 has a clear display back (so you can see the inner workings of the watch) and it’s a shame to have it covered by the NATO-style watch band. So, I went back to the conventional band and have been enjoying quite a bit.

I also noticed that although I have lots of different color watch bands, I keep going back to plain black. I think it just looks so nice. Simple and clean on the wrist. So, after trying out many bands, I have to say that a plain black nylon/canvas strap is what I like best.

I hope you had a nice day!

Nihongo Update

こんばんは。How’s it going?

Today I was listening to some Japanese pop songs that I haven’t heard in a couple years, and I was surprised that I understood a lot more than I used to. Actually, I’d rate my comprehension of the lyrics as maybe 20% of the words, whereas before it might have been 5%. But since it’s mostly just bits and pieces, and not even whole sentences that I understand, I only get the gist of what the song is about. Still, it’s fun to hear the same songs and the mystery is revealed a bit more as I study.

I’ve been using the Anki flashcard system on my computer and phone to boost my vocabulary and it’s pretty good! However, I am going to switch from kana to romaji to get in more vocabulary quicker, then maybe I will switch it up and go back to kana for a bit. There’s a mental gap that I am encountering where I am trying to memorize both the meaning while seeing the kana/kanji and it’s kind of frustrating. So to build some momentum, I am switching to romaji (and I also study my kana cards separately as a refresher) and see if I can get more vocab under my belt.

In other Japanese-related news, I have caught up with Segodon so now I can just watch the TV Japan broadcasts when they are shown. And then I am also watching a Sailor Moon episode here and there. Fun to pick up the new words I have learned.

So, some improvement with my Nihongo, and also a bit of fun with the dorama!

Today’s photo is of my watches, sitting in a Kokuyo pen case. I tidied up my desk, but don’t have a good place to put my watches so I just threw them there. I like looking at them, so I don’t put them in the drawer but it seems like they need a better place to hang out than just the desktop. 😆 We’ll find a good home for them someday!

I hope you had a good Saturday!
